Mining
The two largest mining commodities being exported through the Port of Thevenard are salt and gypsum.
The region has the largest deposit of gypsum in the Southern Hemisphere with approximately 1.685 million tonnes being exported per annum. An average yield of 125,000 tonnes of salt per year is exported through the Port of Thevenard to the Eastern States of Australia and overseas.
Iluka Resources Limited has begun mining and shipping heavy mineral concentrate from their Jacinth-Ambrosia mine located approximately 200km northwest of Ceduna in the Eucla Basin which has been recognised as one of the world's major new zircon production provinces.
Iluka's tenement holding in the Eucla Basin is more than 57,800 square kilometres. In addition to the Jacinth and Ambrosia zircon-rich mineral sands deposits, Iluka have discovered a number of other mineral sands deposits in the Eucla Basin including Tripitaka, Gullivers, Dromedary, Typhoon and Mojave. Iluka is also evaluating the uranium potential of its Eucla Basin tenements. For more information see Mining Fact Sheets.
